Hemp for textile use

Hemp fiber is suitable for textiles uses and is obtained by mechanical work of the external fibrous part of the stem of the plant. The growth of hemp is rapid and requires no special attention. It is sown in the spring and harvested at the end of the summer when fully ripe. Once hemp has been cut and collected, we proceed with the different stages of processing: stripping, combing and refining the plant to obtain the tops, or staple, the primary elements for the spinning process.

Properties of hemp fiber

Structurally, hemp fiber is hollow and hygroscopic, a perfect combination of characteristics that give hemp yarns high thermal insulation and breathable capacity, making it similar to wool: cool in summer and warm in winter. Among the most resistant natural fibers for textile processing, hemp allows to create fabrics that are more resistant to mechanical action than any other natural fabric. Hemp fabrics combine strength with softness, thus making it possible to obtain particularly comfortable clothing.

The fabrics obtained from the hemp plant have also other very interesting properties: they reflect ultraviolet rays, they shield from electrostatic fields, do not conduct electricity, do not irritate the skin because they are hypoallergenic and keep bacteria away from the surface of our body because they are antiseptics.

Hemp for the environment

Hemp plantations do not require aggressive treatments with pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals treatments. The plant can grow up to 4 meters in a few months, has robust roots that induce soil oxygenation and is capable of reclaiming polluted soils and enriching them (increasing productivity) thanks to a strong nitrogen supply. Hemp is also one of the most efficient plants in converting carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Other uses of Hemp

Hemp is a truly versatile plant and is suitable for its usage in various sectors. For food, hemp seeds are consumed directly (peeled) or are used to produce highly protein flours and oils with a high nutritional and antioxidant value. In the pharmaceutical field, essential oils, CBD, are obtained from hemp. In construction, almost all hemp production waste can be used for the construction of insulating and heat-insulating materials. In the arts and crafts, hemp is used to produce a unique and fine paper, perfect for manual printing, for watercolor.
